What is Navratri?

Navratri means "nine nights" in Sanskrit. It honors the divine feminine (Shakti) across nine forms of Goddess Durga, culminating in Dussehra. In the US, the festival is best known for Garba and Dandiya Raas — energetic circle dances performed to live and recorded folk music.

Garba vs. Dandiya Raas

Garba is a graceful circular dance performed around a central lamp or image of the goddess. Dandiya Raas uses decorated wooden sticks (dandiya) struck in rhythm with a partner. Most US Navratri events feature both, often with a live orchestra and a professional singer flown in for the occasion.

What to Wear

Traditional attire elevates the experience: women often wear a chaniya choli (embroidered skirt and blouse) with oxidized jewelry, while men wear a kediyu or kurta. Many events sell out of tickets weeks in advance, so book early.
